Another issue for many writers – and their editors – is where to place punctuation when writing direct speech. Should commas and full stops be placed inside or outside the quotation marks? What about question marks? Which is correct – “I am right,” he said or “I am right”, he said?

There is no simple answer, especially as UK and USA guidelines (inevitably!) differ, but the following guide is a useful reference. Above all, though, I think consistency and logic are most important.
